Fight to stop rare books sell-off

According to an article on BBC News live, Tuesday, 2 September 2008, 'Cardiff Council could eventually sell up to 18,000 items dating from the 15th Century at auction to raise money for improvements in library services.'

Is this a dangerous trend? In 2003 Oriel College at Oxford University sold their copy of Shakespeare's First Folio to pay for building repairs and textbooks.
